Banging my head against a wall…..

on January 23, 2009

aka: trying to teach Emily her colors.

I wonder if she is the ONLY two year old that thinks everything is pink. She just doesn’t get it. As hard as I try, as often as we talk about colors…Pink. Everything is pink. I have two theories:

  1. She just has no interest in learning her colors. She’s too busy doing everything else.
  2. She’s color or shade blind.

I am leaning more toward #1. Luckily we have our Parent Educator coming over next week (as long as the weather cooperates). I am going to talk to her then. If you have any ideas, I would love to have them.

We have tried a matching game with paint chips. It held her attention for about 5 minutes…

PS: One other thing that I worry about probably needlessly is the fact that she still can’t jump. It’s still one foot then the other. Never at once. I think she’s scared. Like she was with walking. It will come….

It’s #1. Promise. Sean has amazed me with what he learned early – and worried me with what he just didn’t seem to get at all! Colors was one of those. Now he knows ’em back and forth. Same with jumping, I thought it was never going to happen. And even tho he now has that down, he still can’t/won’t walk up and down steps without holding on.

So stop worrying, Momma! She’s doing great!

I wouldn’t worry about it Karon… Aidan thinks everything is red… he and emily are so much alike, just a few shades different. 🙂 Aidan knows his colors but he only really remembers red. We play the color game in the produce section by buying at least one thing in each color… then we go home and if he repeats them after I say them, he gets to try the different fruits.

Don’t stress Karon, it will come I promise. Its amazing what little kids learn. They all learn at different speeds and remember she is only two!

Karon: I agree with the others. It’s #1. Although Dax started picking up his colors a few months ago, he really confused red and yellow forever! Anything that was red, he didn’t see as red. Even once he was getting everything else. We’d ask, and he’d say yellow. Soon, he’d learn by our reaction that wasn’t right, and he’d quickly guess, “red.” We figured he was color blind. But, then, all of a sudden, he got red. Now we can show him new things he’s never seen before that are red, and he knows. One thing that really helped him with colors was his obsession with Thomas and Friends — all the trains’ different colors. Maybe find something Emily really is interested in that has lots of colors in it that are easy to identify. Try working with her using that.

As for the jumping – perfectly normal for kids not to be able to jump for real at this age. She’ll get it. It’s not like she’s going to be 5 years old and not know how to jump, KWIM? Course, it’s entirely possible that, like many white girls (me included…LOL!) she’ll have no vertical…but that’s another story!!
