Love Overflowing

I am going to kill two birds with one stone here. Combining events in one post.

Emily just finished up a session of gymnastics through the parks department. She LOVED it. She looked forward to every Thursday night. She thought gymnastics was fun but also because she happened to know one of the little girls in the class. All week all I heard about was gymnastics, Miss Emma and Amelia. She would have gone every night if it was offered.

Her last class ended up being on the 23rd due to a class cancellation. That night the parent got to come in and see what the kids learned. It was pretty cute to see Emily showing off her moves. She perfected the balance beam and forward rolls. She was able  to do some flips and jump on the trampoline. She actually was pretty good at the hula hoop as well.

While I am on the topic of gymnastics, I am going to talk about an awesome playdate that we attended this past week. Our playgroup had a mommy and me class at one of our local gymnastics joints. Since Emily was still high on gymnastics, I thought we would take advantage of the fun. She was in heaven! She got to do the balance beam,  bars, ball pit, trampoline and tons of other things. She was even able to do the balance beam on her own. I was pretty impressed with that considering that it was higher than my waist!

I think we are going to look into enrolling Emily into a gymnastics class. The one through the parks department was nice but it was only a 6 week session and there is only so much they can do in the basement of the hall. I think Emily would really benefit from this. Now we just have to find the perfect place to take her. One that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg!

One word to describe it…. Mass chaos!!!

There were 7 adults (we were missing my brother Richard) and 9 children ranging in age 4-11 months. In my house. My not super huge house. It was loud and chaotic but wonderful. I love when we all get together. I love seeing the kids interact together. It really makes me wish we lived closer so Zachary and Emily would have some cousins to play with more regularly.
It was great. We ate, drank and had a wonderful time. The kids got to play until they were silly tired and then got to rip open some presents. There was paper flying everywhere! The kids were really getting into it. Zachary even. He was crawling into his gift bag to get the book that I didn’t see and he even got to rip open a present or two. Practice for next month.
We didn’t get everyone together last year for Christmas so this was extra special. Last year Cole was just born and I was very close to my due date. Circumstances prevented us from celebrating together but my family is never too far away from my heart. Despite the distance, the good and the bad, they are always a part of me.
I love it!

In da house

Would you believe that I have never decorated a gingerbread house? That that I can remember anyway! Emily is at a great age to do this so we decorated one together this year. I am not cool enough to make my own pieces so I bought a kit at Michael’s. I put the base together while she played with playdoh- an even exchange I think. Later that afternoon, the decorating began!

I am really not sure how you are supposed to keep the icing from getting too hard after sitting for several hours in order to let the house set. I *meant* to put a drop or two of water in to soften it up. Meant to but that’s not how much came out. Whoops! The icing was a little runny so the candy had a hard time sticking. I was so mad at myself. Emily didn’t care though. She didn’t notice it one way or the other. She really enjoyed eating candy while putting it on the house.

For this being our first attempt at a gingerbread house, I think it turned out pretty cute. I think Zachary can get into some of the action next year. It’ll be great!

I have officially sewed something on my own! I made the Clifford blanket several months back but this was the first thing that I totally did on my own. Picked out the fabric, started from scratch and didn’t have a patter per se. I found several different directions on how to make a twirly skirt and incorporated different approaches into the final product. I don’t think it turned out too bad for it being early on in my sewing experience. Just don’t look too closely at the seams or the evenness of the rick rack. Emily loves it and that is the important part! After I finished the skirt, I took some of the leftover material and made an applique to go on her shirt. That didn’t turn out the way I had planned but I think it still looked cute nonetheless.

We’re bored

I am sure I would be hearing that if they were older. It’s been a really, really cold December so far. There was a day or two where we didn’t leave the house. Highs in the teens. There really wasn’t anywhere that I needed to go that justified sausaging Zachary into his winter coat and freezing. Made for some really long days though.

I asked for some ideas on how to keep your kids active when it is too cold to go outside. I got some great answers. Painting, play doh, tv, forts, etc. I need to find more ways to keep Emily physically active as well. She needs to burn off some energy most days! We did take one person’s advice that same day. We threw a whole bunch of pillows into a pile. I then tossed both kids into the pillows. Exercise for me too- bonus! I am really not sure who had more fun- Emily or Zachary. They both would clamor up and fight for the next turn. Emily could have done it all day long. Me, on the other hand, not so much. It gets tiring tossing a combined weight of almost 70 pounds over and over again!

Emily has also played with play-doh, colored on the patio door, played in the rain and used her imagination. Give Zachary wheels to play with and he is good. That or leave the toilet lid open.

I am always on the hunt for more activities to do. Our go-to for every thing friends are in full-time daycare now so it’s hard to find stuff for Emily to do where I can watch Zachary. I think it will get a bit easier as he starts walking. It’s going to be a long winter though.

Guess it’s that time. It’s hard to believe that my little guy will be turning one next month. Invites went in the mail to the family today. I think they turned out pretty darn cute!

Huge thanks to SLW Designs for the super cute invite!

Christmas art

We are slow going on the art projects this year. Emily and I have been doing some little ones here and there but nothing really major until now. Emily made a Rudolph and Zachary made a Christmas tree. It was Zachary’s first time making a craft. He painted the tree by himself. He did really well with the finger paints. I was afraid it was going to go into his mouth immediately but he didn’t even try to taste it. Shocking! I think both projects turned out cute. Hopefully we’ll be able to fit a few more in before Christmas.

11 down…. One more to go!

It’s hard to imagine that party planning time is very close at hand! 11 months ago Zachary entered our hearts and lives. What an 11 months it has been!

Month 11 was full of fun! We got lots of time to play outside before it was cold. Zachary experienced his first Thanksgiving with all the fixings and his cousin’s first birthday. He also created his first craft, painted for the first time and helped “decorate” the tree.

Zachary is turning out to be quite the daredevil. He can’t walk yet but he can climb anything in the blink of an eye. I have found him climbing to the couch, the fireplace and even found him climbing a step ladder while in his sleep sack. His favorite places in the house continue to be Emily’s bedroom, the trash can and the toilet. He has truly discovered anything that opens. I am going to have to buy more drawer and cabinet locks. Things that we never had to do with Emily we are finding need to be done with Zachary.

He smiles all the time. Except when he is teething and cranky. Speaking of teeth, we are up to four. He gained his top two this month. He is still in love with his binkie and his sleep sack. You will know he is tired when he finds is sleep sack and starts rolling around with it. He also loves to play peek a boo. It is a fun game that he initiates. It especially makes diaper changes a little easier when he decides to play.

Zachary does have a few words. He can say: bye-bye, hi, bah-ba (bottle), momma, dadda. I swear I heard him say Santa a few times but I haven’t heard it since. He also says ball. He waves and claps. Zachary is always on the go. He finds that crawling is his best mode of transportation because he is super fast.

I love that Zachary is such a snuggler. He pull on your legs to let you know he wants to be held. He loves just sitting with you. He also loves being read to. I am so glad that both of my kids are going to grow up with a love of books. He loves fruits but hates vegetables. I think I need to invest in the “Sneaky Chef” book. While he was at the doctor’s office getting his follow-up flu shot, I had them weigh him. He tips the scales now at 21 + pounds. He is definitely going up on the growth chart!

11 months have gone by in the blink of an eye. Pretty soon I’ll be writing about Zachary’s first birthday.

His 11 month picture was hard to capture

A cousin turns 1!

My nephew, Cole, turned one on Thanksgiving day! It’s so exciting to see Cole and Zachary together because they are only 7 months a part. It’s hard though not to compare because they are 7 weeks a part and that’s quite a bit in the beginning.

Cole is such a cute little guy! We attended his party the Saturday after Thanksgiving. His party was okay in my book because it had a Scooby Doo theme. And any party involving Scooby is pretty cool! My sister had set up the small bounce house again. Zachary has gotten even more brave than the last time he was in it. He wasn’t just sitting in it. He was sliding down the slide. Face first. He did really well until all the big kids came over. Zachary got really mad when we took him out and kept trying to crawl back over there and get his jump on. It was pretty hilarious!

The party was fun and the kids had a blast with their cousins! It’s hard to believe that Cole is now 1! That means that Zachary’s birthday is right around the corner!

Putting up the tree

This year was unlike every other year since Stephen and I have been married. Our tree was up, not decorated though, before Thanksgiving. Usually we are putting up our tree on the Sunday after we gorge ourselves. Not this year. Stephen had the week off prior to the holiday and we knew we needed to take advantage of the “down” time since our weekend was pretty packed. Before you get disgusted with us, we did wait until Friday evening before we put the ornaments on the tree. Emily wasn’t happy with the fact that the tree sat there “naked” for several days, mocking her with its bare branches.

Emily really got into decorating this year. She was really enjoying going through the ornaments. She REALLY enjoyed putting them on the tree. We could have sat all the ornaments out and let her decorate herself actually. But where would the fun been in that? Zachary could have cared less of course. He put up his “First Christmas” ornament and then decided it was time to find some mischief.  We lasted about one box of ornaments before we decided that we needed to take a “put Zachary to bed” break.

The house looks nice and festive. The gate around the tree really makes the decor pop! It’s fashionable and functional. And lots of fun to pull out the strand of beads that I dumbly decorated with.
